A Statistical Analysis of Risk Factors and Biological Behavior in Canine Mammary Tumors: A Multicenter Study

Burrai GP, Gabrieli A, Moccia V, Zappulli V, Porcellato I, Brachelente C, Pirino S, Polinas M, Antuofermo E. A Statistical Analysis of Risk Factors and Biological Behavior in Canine Mammary Tumors: A Multicenter Study. Animals. 2020;10(9):1687. doi:10.3390/ani10091687.

This study investigates risk factors associated with canine mammary tumors (CMTs) using data from 1866 tumors across three academic institutions. Statistical and machine learning analyses revealed that dogs with malignant tumors were significantly older (9.6 vs. 8.7 years) and had larger tumors (2.69 vs. 1.7 cm) compared to those with benign tumors. Interestingly, 18% of malignant tumors were under 1 cm in diameter, suggesting that tumor size may need reassessment in clinical staging. The study identifies age and tumor size as strong predictors of malignancy, with an overall diagnostic accuracy of 0.63.
