Gu H, Yang C, Haeri M, Wang J, Tang S, Yan W, et al. Augmenting Pathologists with NaviPath: Design and Evaluation of a Human-AI Collaborative Navigation System. CHI '23: Proceedings of the 2023 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. 2023; Article No. 349:1-19. https://doi.org/10.1145/3544548.3580694

Summary: This study introduces NaviPath, a human-AI collaborative system designed to assist pathologists in navigating high-resolution tumor images to identify pathology patterns. Based on insights from a formative study with six pathologists, NaviPath was developed to enhance navigation efficiency and accuracy. In an evaluation involving 15 pathologists, the system allowed participants to view over twice the number of pathological patterns per unit time compared to manual navigation. Additionally, participants achieved higher precision and recall rates using NaviPath. The system also provided more consistent navigation, potentially improving the quality of pathological examinations.
